NorthStar Economics' focus on strategic economic development includes specific expertise in the field of rural economic development. Rural areas face particular challenges in the New Economy, including limited resources, lower population density, and fewer of the career opportunities and cultural attractions available in metropolitan areas. We can examine the challenges and opportunities in rural areas and develop strategic plans to maximize the potential of existing assets for future economic growth. Recent projects include a strategic economic development plan for the Town of Saratoga, Wyoming (population 2,000); a study examining health care, entrepreneurship, and investment capital strategies for the eight counties served by the International Trade, Business, and Economic Development Council (ITBEC) of Southwest Wisconsin; and an 18-county region in northeastern Wisconsin, where many of the counties are rural, integrating the rural community assets into the regional strategy; developing the foundation for a federal technology grant application that incorporates rural areas with research centers in New Hampshire; formulating an economic development strategy for a rural Ohio county with nearby university connections and cross-state border collaborations. The International Trade,
Business, and Economic Development Council of Southwestern Wisconsin (SW-ITBEC)
was formed in 1995 for the purpose of promoting economic growth in
southwestern Wisconsin through regional collaboration. NorthStar outlined an economic agenda for the predominantly rural region involving health care, entrepreneurship and investment capital, and organic agriculture. Additionally, we developed a three year operational plan to guide SW-ITBEC’s efforts in regional economic development. |
